More about this scene
Built in the 1880s as a memorial to William Thorngate, a philanthropic grocer and tea merchant who donated money for local housing, the Thorngate Hall was regularly used for public meetings until it was gutted by an incen- diary bomb in the winter of 1940. It was demolished in the 1950s and replaced with a new building.
