The imposing front of the Western Infirmary. Between 1861 and 1881 the city experienced four major cholera epidemics. To add to this, rickets and tuberculosis were endemic amongst mill workers and smallpox was rife. During this period, a quarter of all children born to mill workers died before reaching their first birthday.
