Bayonne Road And Garvan Road

A Memory of Fulham.

My dad ted williams was born in bayonne road next door to the Baptist church. I was born in garvan road December 1949. My mums mum lived four doors away and my aunts all lived in fulham, it was a close neighbourhood but in a more formal way in that you never became too intrusive my parents always referred to neighbours as mr or mrs.. My brothers and sister all have fond memories of playing rounders, tennis and knock down ginger in the road. We had great fun at the big rec and little rec. Walking home from Sir John lillie I remember playing on the bomb sites which seemed just a normal part of our childhood. Both my parents have died and now I am in my late 60s I wished I had asked more questions about the day to day life during and after the war.
I remember the rag and bone man who came round on his horse and of course santelli ice cream van.

Dear Marie, I don't know whether you remember me. We were quite friendly fir s while. My name is Pamela Hatchett, I lived in Bayonne Road and I came to know you through Linda Arnott when we were about 15. I hope you are well.

Hi Marie, We also lived in Garvan Road and then we moved to Bayonne Road in about 1962 (I was 10) we lived next door to Pamela Hatchett. I can remember doing all the things that you mention, always playing on the bomb sites for some reason, finding parts from old bikes and making carts, playing football up the big rec and little rec, out in the street all the time and getting filthy dirty and having a wash in the tin bath, but Friday going to fulham baths and having a proper wash.

Hello, I am currently researching my family tree and a family connection of mine Ethel Lilian Childs resided at Garvan Road 1939 - I am trying to find record of this road via google Maps but cannot seem to locate. Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction as where this was situated? Thanks!

Dear Liana, i used to live in Garvan rd in the 50s 60s and sorry to say that it was demolished in the seventies along with 3 other roads nearby.
It was opposite the junction of Margavine rd and Greyhond rd, Hammersmith.
Good luck with your search
Hi Maurice, lovely to hear from you mate I remember you well! I don't like using facebook but I see Linda on it, It's lovely your mum is still alive, I can remember all of them sitting on your front wall, your mum, and Joycie, and I can't remember the name of the 'big lady' who used to sit inside the open window, and of course your dad (lovely bloke I remember) riding down the street on his red P.O bike.
Hi Steven, nice to hear from you as well, how is your brother John, and your sisters Linda and Babs ? bumped into Linda back in the early seventies at a night club The Cats Whiskers in Streatham, also remember John having a punch op with someone from Crefield Rd, think John was eldest one of our little gang.
My Aunt Joyce is still around and living in Tasso Road she is 92 and that other lady you mentioned was Aunt Lil (died).
Your step brother Raymond Lucas died a few years ago, David l think is still alive
What part of the country are you all living now, ask john if he misses Fyffes Bananas, hopefully Marie Williams picks up these messages, all the best for now, regards Maurice
