Hamilton House Prep School Ealing
A Memory of Ealing.
As a child, I lived at 24 Sunnyside Road Ealing W5 not far from Ealing Studios, from when I was born at the start of the war in1938 until I was 16 and my parents moved to Harrow on the Hill.
I went to Hamilton House Preparatory school in Florence Road from 1945 until 1949.
It was situated in a large Victorian house and was presided over by the headmaster AG Phillips.
In those days corporal punishment was the accepted norm in private schools and Phillips relished using a leather shaving strop with which he would beat you on both hands for the slightest misdemeanour.
He would prowl the corridors in search of prey and if you were unfortunate enough to be sent to stand outside the classroom door for, say talking, he would march you to his study for a beating.
He had assembled an extraordinary array of teachers, who were decidedly eccentric, including a Mr Roll who taught Geography and History. In later years I am surprised how much I managed to learn there, given that I lived in total fear for most of the time.
We had to wear a somewhat ornate uniform consisting of a blazer and cap with blue and white striped piping adorning each lapel and edge.
If there is anyone out there that was at the school at the same time, do get in touch. It would be fun to reminisce.

We must have overlapped by about 3 years although I do not remember your name.
Looking at my school photographs, which I remember being taken because the camera moved in an arc to get us all in, I can remember several names, surnames of course. I was wondering whether you can remember any of the following or have kept in touch with any one else from that time?
Sherlock, Luck, Parker, Lamb, The Bland twins, the Woodwood brothers, Peter Brooker, Brian Stainer and John Russell.
Nothing could have prepared me for the horrors of public school. Epsom was a hell hole, caning was regular. bullying rife. I failed everything and I left with a deep distrust of people, that I carry to this day.
Phillips sold the place, but his successor could only keep it going for a short while. He was OK with me. The danger was some ponce would tell Phillips that someone was standing outside a classroom. Happened to me. I took a bat to the tyke and was left alone.
I was at HH from 1945 to 1949 and curiously have no recollection of him. The only Brian I remember was Brian Stainer.
I also remember Mr Chaucer, who was the headmaster before AG Phillips. He did indeed use a cane, once breaking the skin on my buttocks and making it bleed. However, he wasn't a sadist like Phillips, whose liberal use of the strap was such that I often dreaded going to school.
Thank goodness corporal punishment is now banned and people like Phillips would now be prosecuted.
