More about this scene
Denmead started to grow when Portsea Island began to expand its boundaries and creep up over Portsdown Hill. It became a parish in 1880, but before the local vicar gave it a name and an identity of its own, it was little more than a scattered collection of houses and cottages. Much of the village was on an estate belonging to Ashling House, which was demolished about the time this picture was taken.
