More about this scene
The two oldest buildings in Congleton are both inns, the White Lion near the Town Hall and the Lion and Swan shown here. However, Congleton is known as the Bear Town. Bear-baiting was once so popular here that, when the town's bear died, the local people were so anxious to replace it that they sold the town's Bible in order to get funds to buy a new bear for 16 shillings (80p).
