Westgate School.
A Memory of Cippenham.
Westgate opened in 1958 for my last school year. I competed in the discus and cross country, and represented the school in rugby and a decathlon. Great school, followed by Slough College.
Later, I emigrated and worked for a company in Australia, then the government. My boss talked me into studying, which later led to university where I met my wife.

I represented the school at rugby and athletics. I also played in the Buckinghamshire Schools U/15 side with fellow pupil John Lawrence. P E Teacher Terry Davies was a great influence and I had the pleasure of playing alongside him in his farewell match for London Welsh at Slough Rugby Club. I played the part of Bill Sykes in the school production of Oliver and I am still in touch with 'Nancy'! Looking back I just wish the school had been a lot stricter as I certainly wasted my last year and left without any qualifications. I know they glad to see the back of me!
Don't be too concerned re the lack of qualifications. When I attended, there were school exams but no GCE/GCSE. I completed a Pre - Technical course at Slough College of Further Education. Later, in Australia, I completed the local equivalent of 'A' levels, then a Degree and, later still, A Graduate Diploma.
In other words, it is possible to obtain qualifications later, if you so desire.
Nice to receive your comment. There were no discos or ice skating when I was at Westgate and I don't recall any drama. However, it was the first year the school had opened so it would have taken time to add the 'extras'.
It was a much better school than The William Penn School for Boys at Manor park that I had previously attended.
