More about this scene

We are approaching Chandler's Ford from Southampton along Bournemouth Road, altered from Southampton Road to avoid confusion with another road of that name. Hendy's had a large works in Southampton, but seeing the potential in Chandler's Ford, the firm opened a garage. After the Second World War it moved its works to this site, closing the petrol service station and developing a large showroom and repair shop. Apparently, the move has been successful, as Hendy Ltd has recently put forward plans for considerable development, possibly moving to the site to be vacated by Manor Bakeries (see page 39).

My First Job
Our family had already started plans to emigrate to Canada in 1956. I graduated from North End Secondary Modern after completing my O levels in June. I needed a job for a few months until we left in November. I heard that Dr Burge the chemist was looking for someone to fill in for a while. I applied for the job and started right away. Velmore Camp
I was born at Velmore Camp in 1954 and lived there with my parents, Fred and Margaret Eldridge, and my sister Lynette. A year later we moved to Derby Road, Eastleigh. Have tried unsuccessfully to find information about Velmore and would appreciate anything anyone might know please.

Scarlet Fever
I had scarlel fever and was sent the Isolation Hospital as it was then called . I had no idea where I was and hated it there so much so I didn't eat.I was only about 4 or 5 & one night I had diarroea & fouled my bed. The nurse was cross because she had to change the bed clothes and give me a bath. I returned home after 10 days.

The Tabby Cat
Every day, on the way to primary school, Sherborne House I was driven past the Tabby Cat, from the Vicarage at North Baddesley where I lived. Every day I was told "Oh look, can you see the tabby cat?" A picture on the door I think it was supposed to be. I could never see it, and never knew where the others were looking...

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
