Canterbury, Mercery Lane c.1952

More about this scene
Leading to the cathedral, this narrow alleyway with its overhanging shop fronts was the usual route by which pilgrims approached the climax of their journey. It would have been lined with shops and stalls selling religious medallions, phials of water from Becket's Well in the cathedral crypt and other memorabilia; the lane still conveys much of its medieval atmosphere, particularly when decorated with evergreens as in this photograph.
