More about this scene
The cottages and mature trees are typical of Bolton-by-Bowland. This beautiful village, once famous for its skilled bowmen, stands on the edge of Bowland Forest. The school, built of local limestone, replaced a school which had stood on the Green since 1620. This village green was also the site of the court house. Hatters, shoemakers and corn millers, along with stonemasons, joiners and blacksmiths, kept the village well supplied in the 19th century.
