The Jolly Gardeners.

A Memory of Battersea.

My grandparents Ben and Margaret Hiller had the Jolly Gardeners pub on York Road. I cannot find any record of it or any person that remembers it.
I was born in 1966 and can remember it vividly, also the distintive smell from the candle factory . There was a bank or post office opposite, I remember watching the queues and the clock above the counter.

My dad is their son Benjamin , known at that time as Benny and his sister Joyce.

I would love to hear from anyone who remembers the pub or my grandparents.

My great grandparents Joseph Austen Lamb and Frances Harrop were married in Christchurch Battersea on 12th October 1884. I also believe their first son Thomas was baptised there.
If memory serves me correctly
The jolly Gardeners was on the right had side going towards the princes head.
And it was a post office opposite prices.
Re Ben and Margret Hiller, So Mags as she was know is my great aunt my grandad her brother was William James Payne which would make him your great uncle Bill, i was born in 1956 in the house that a few of the Paynes share which was in the Old Livingstone Rd Battersea. I remember the minor bird they had in the pub swore like a trooper. i have a picture of the Jolly Gardeners if you would like it you need to give me your e mail address as i cant post it here for some reason it is text only. There is quite a bit of info on the Facebook page called "The Paynes" take a look, i think your Mother may be on there. Regards Tony O'Grady. Oh and it was Gartons sugar factory that stunk all over Battersea.
I remember Ben & Marge very well. Opposite the jolly Gardeners was Battersea Central Mission with the post office below. In the Basement they had a youth Club "BCM" where we used play darts and table tennis etc. No alcohol though, so we would end up at Ben & Marge's. Ben started up a Boys dart team and entered us into local league. We were all in our late teens at the time in fact I had just finished my National Service. about 1957 ish. Ben used to come to all the Dart team away games with us, it was probably the only time I saw Ben in a Suit.
They were a lovely couple
