Ripple Road

A Memory of Barking.

I was born in 1948 and lived behind Wallis's undertakers in Ripple Road, where my dad was the manager. I went to St Margaret's Church of England School in Back Lane, and was married at St Margaret's Church in 1970. I also did my nursing training at Barking (Upney) Hospital, before moving to Colchester. I have memories of losing my Easter bonnet into the Town Quay one Sunday morning after church.

Hi Carol,
I was born in 1948 and went to St Margarets c of e primary school, so we were probably in the same class. Do you remember in the nursery class, sleeping on camp beds in the playground? Or the musicians that visited to play for us, the toilet block in the playground and the air raid shelter next to the hall? Mike Maynard
I'm Carol's younger brother. Went to the same school. Dennis Hanbury was the headmaster. He became my godfather as I wasn't baptised until I was 10. His deputy was Mr Gray, who lived near Upper Holloway station. The only other teacher I remember is Miss Simpkins. Yes, I remember those stacking canvas and tubular steel beds, and the toilet block. During 'music and movement' (is that what we called it then?) lessons the teacher would play music through some crappy speaker. When the weather was good we'd have those lessons on the grass in the abbey grounds, between the remains of the abbey walls. I've lost touch with my sister Carol, but if she ever gets to see this, she's welcome to get in touch. I'm easily found via Google. Jack Martin Leith (previously plain old Martin Leith).
