Amersham On The Hill, Sycamore Road c.1955

More about this scene
The new town of Amersham on the Hill developed from the 1890s when, after 60 years of opposition, the Drakes and then the Tyrwhitt-Drakes finally allowed the railway to come to Amersham, but up the hill and out of sight of their mansion and park at Shardeloes. The Metropolitan Railway's station opened in September 1892. This view captures well the somewhat disparate architecture of the shopping centre with mock timber-framing vying with mock Georgian styles.
