I lived here in the late 60's early 70's when it was closed. My dad Peter Bishop ran the pub up the road. Paid a nostalgic trip back here in Sept '19 and what a shame that the old place had gone. Still, brought back a lot of memories of playing in the garden and catching newts in the pond that was there. We had so much fun exploring the magical building. I was born over the shop at 1, High Street, then a MacFisheries where my Grandad was the manager until he retired at the end of October, 1956. We stayed there, with the shop closed, until moving to Downland Way, Tattenham Corner in 1958. Mum worked at R.J. Chapple (have I got the spelling right?) where she was the counter clerk at the sub-Post Office until she retired. The shops in the High Street that I remember ...see more
My memory for dates is suspect, so forgive any slight inaccuracy, however the important facts remain vivid and accurate memories. Great friends of my family gave a party for their son David's birthday in 1962. He had unfortunately died as a result of a car crash earlier that year - so it was a very mixed emotion celebration. We lived in Tadourne Rd,our house was called Hova,I'm not sure what the number was.We were there until about 1965,I was born in Ewell in 1957. My father was Eddie Cracknell,a jockey who was quite successful in the UK for many years. He was an Aussie who came over to race,met my mother,a dancer in the West End...very glam.
