More about this scene
Barges plied up and down the Wharfe delivering to the breweries, including John Smith's at Tadcaster, pictured here. The Wharfe was prone to flooding, and the Victorians were forced to move a church further up the bank out of reach of the invading waters. Here, a long, rickety-looking and precarious plank stretches from the moored sailing barge in the centre of the river to the bank.
