More about this scene
Sunbury was also in Middlesex until 1965. Here Frith's photographer looks east along Thames Street in Lower Sunbury. The houses on the right, including The Little House facing the camera (and now painted a bright pink), have the River Thames as their south boundary. The road runs alongside the river, and an ait, or island, lies beside the trees in the distance. The mansard-roofed building on the left is now a Café Rouge, and the shops are now houses.
