The doors next to the Gladstone arms was the blacksmiths shop this is were i had to leave my bike when i went to combs ford school 1947 to 1953.Mr Stamers was the blacksmith he lived next door.
Mr Oby Barber was the manager this is were i learned to swim in 1946 in the small pool.it was not heated then in May it was-------cold but we still went in if mums would let us.
When I was little, I remember Stowmarket as being full of interesting shops. There also was a good market on Thursdays and Saturdays. I remember the 50p stall!! My Dad knew the bloke who ran that. Mind you, my Dad knew everybody!! there was a toy stall run from a caravan, and an Indoor Market which has gone now. Whilst studying at Stowmarket Grammar School from 1967-1972, I worked at Woolworths in Stowmarket. Living in Bacton, this meant that I had to cycle to the bus stop about two miles at the other end of the village and then get the bus in to Stowmarket.
