Stourport grew around the former village of Little Mitton by a stroke of fortune. Brindley originally wanted to bring his canal to the Severn at Bewdley, but the locals there objected to the very idea of such a 'stinking ditch'. Their obstinacy led to the creation of Stourport. The House of Laughter, seen here on the right, offers 'laughter with a scream, one penny only'.
