More about this scene

Stonehenge is the most well-known stone circle in the world, and this view is possibly one of the most remembered and famous. It shows the Hele stone between the middle upright, where the sun is deemed to rise directly above it on the longest day of the year, June 21st. Despite the usual presence of modern-day 'Druids' (who have no historical connection with Stonehenge), the sun does not rise directly above the stone and never did, even 4,000 years ago. But let us not be churlish about an event that is still spectacular and memorable.

A Very Early Memory Of Mine.
This would be around the first time I visited Stonehenge - I have a clear memory of sitting on the stone in the foreground. My father was a sergeant major (REME) at the local army base, Aldershot?, in the early to mid sixties. Dating Error
Great Collection! I have scratched my head over a few of these, date-wise, but this one isn't in question. Central in the picture we see the outside of the formidable West Trilithon, spanking clean and completely shorn of its mantle of lichen. The reason is, it lay on that side for nigh-on 160 years, having collapsed in a gale on 3 January 1797. (The great pit that Treasure Hunters had dug at its base didn't help ...see more

A Faked Photo!
This is a faked photo! Stone 56 is upright only because it has been drawn in on the negative - the clue is that Stones 21, 22 and their lintel 121 had collapsed before stone 56 was straightened in 1901. (If you are not a Stonehenge geek that probably was too much information!) Climbing On Them
When I was ten years old our dad took us out for the day to see Stonehenge. I remember he parked close to the ring of stones and then my brothers and I climbed on them. Not so easy now.

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
