More about this scene
Four years before this photograph was taken, the famous writer and poet Hilaire Belloc walked across Sussex from Robertsbridge in the east to Harting in the west. Built of ships' timbers, the 17th-century Ship Inn survives as a traditional local. The sign on the wall reads: 'Good accommodation for cyclists; parties catered for; good stabling; pony and trap for hire'. The writer Anthony Trollope lived here briefly.
