More about this scene
From the 1880s to the mid-1930s, Sharpness was the third largest port in the UK for the importing of timber, including pine and spruce from Canada and the Baltic and teak from Burma. At one time, pine baulks, which were fifty to sixty feet in length, were discharged not onto the docks, but into them. They were then chained together and towed by tug to Gloucester.
