More about this scene
The abbey was founded by Benedict of Auxerre, who was instructed in a vision to go to Selebaie in England. Armed with one of the fingers from St Germain, Benedict set off. As he sailed up the Ouse, three swans settled in the water where Selby now stands. Taking this for a sign, Benedict planted a cross, built a hut, and with a lot of help from King William the abbey was founded.
