Travelling from Dittisham to any location that was not on the river was a headache in the days before the car. In the late 19th century young Ewart Hutchings was educated at Upton School in Torquay, and to get there he had to take the ferry to Greenway, walk to Churston, get the train to Torquay and then walk to Upton.
