The old market cross on the village green at Great Longstone has stood there since medieval times, when the village was granted the right to hold a weekly market.
The name of the Crispin Inn in Great Longstone recalls one of the village's former specialities, boot and shoe making - St Crispin is the patron saint of that trade.
We are near the long stone road bridge to Houghton, built in 1875 and crossing the tidal River Arun.
Houghton is a hamlet with a long stone bridge across the tidal River Arun.The inn is a 13th-century timber-framed brick and flint building.
On the left, the east pier reaches out across the harbour towards the railway station complex, with the long stone pier carrying the line continuing on towards the small lighthouse at its end.
Sadly, the long stone range on the left was demolished as a result of road improvement.
Houghton is a hamlet with a long stone bridge across the tidal River Arun.
Hall Garth, built c1800, stands opposite the cross; behind is a long stone barn to store corn.
The scene is recognisable today, though the National Benzole petrol station on the left has gone, and so has the long stone wall on the right.
