More about this scene
The spire was added some sixty years after the cathedral was completed in 1260AD. Block your hand over the spire and try to imagine the cathedral without it. The effect would be geometric, and your eyes would remain horizontal. In the middle ages, society and thought was stratified. The addition of the spire was intended to take your eyes upwards.
