Until the 1950s, Puddletown was officially 'Piddletown', but - unlike the villages further up the river valley - the authorities changed this to the more acceptable Puddletown. Villagers call it by both names even today, sometimes mischievously to fox the tourists.

My grandparents lived in Puddletown from the 1940's to the 1970's. They lived and worked at the Myrtles for Peter Ricardo who was well known in the village.
As a child I lived in the estate office in the square, my father was estate bailiff for W J Brymer for all of the war years. I remember many of the troops were billeted with us in the house, at one time we had fifteen staying in the attic.
