The clock tower at the northern end of the High Street was built to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887. By the time this photograph was taken, it had been reduced to nothing more than an ornamental roundabout for the traffic.

My father was stationed in Lakenheath, England in 1963. My mother and 2 brothers followed 3 months later - I was 12 at the time. Coming from Texas, November in England was a shock, and it was the coldest winter they'd had in 60 years. We rented a flat in Newmarket, in what had been the Carlton Hotel. I went to the old school just down the road from the new one; A teacher that I remember was called John Satterly.
