More about this scene
Formerly the Kingston Arms coaching inn, the Clinton Arms has connections with Lord Byron, who stayed here whilst his first book of poems, 'Fugitive Pieces', was being printed at the local firm of S & J Ridge. The future prime minister William Gladstone gave his first ever public speech in his political career from one of the inn's windows. Gladstone was a nominee of the Duke of Newcastle, who effectively chose Newark's members of parliament. In May 1831 Thomas Wilde managed to upset the duke by winning a seat; the duke retaliated by evicting those of his tenants who had voted for Wilde.
