Many historic houses in Scotland were gutted so that their owners could avoid paying rates. Many were demolished for other reasons. Of the one hundred or so buildings in Scotland associated with the Adam brothers, fewer than half survive. Fittings from Hawkhill in Edinburgh were saved by the Scottish Georgian Society just two days before the building burnt down. Culdees Castle was demolished in 1967.

My earliest memory of Culdees was going out through the rhododendrons with my grandfather and coming back with a honeycomb from the beehives he tended, he worked on the estate as Gamekeeper / Driver and my grandmother ( known by the Gardiners as 'Mickey') worked in the castle.
