My family lived in Westbrook Road, off West Town Lane, Brislington, from early 1949 until April 21 1958, when I was just over 11 years old. We suddenly left on that day and moved to Hertfordshire, and apart from one nostalgic return on my racing bike in my mid-teens I didn't come back again until 2009.

Does anyone remember the holy cross school on the wallsend side of the burn bridge well that's were I went to school. We lived in holy cross and remember my grandfather coming to pick me up in his little red mini car , in them days it was a gravel road I fell and cut my hand still have the scare now.does any body remember the school or went the same time as me around 1960
A fascinating picture looking south from the church. The line of houses in Turner Street can be seen in the distance, also some in Norwood corner area where our family moved to in the late 50s. On the extreme right of the picture is one of the majestic elm trees, sadly gone now, due to the ravages of Dutch Elm disease. The trees were such a feature of the village landscape in those days.

I was born in a house named Edinburgh in St James Ave, The Homesteads. I went to the infants school and remember a lovely teacher by the name of Mrs Quinn. In the junior school I remember a dragon of a teacher by the name of Miss Naylor. I grew up in the village and my best friend was Marlene Webber , I remember the infants school with the cherry trees at the bottom of the playground , we were always pinching them ( can't stand them now, probably cos ate so many Ha Ha ! ) Also used to play in Ken Rowes garden, he had a swing and an old train carriage , remember a live band playing there once it was great HAPPY DAYS

I fondly remember "Barrowell Green swimming pool. After the war it was on weekly visit.
Now hears a thing opposite the pool was a old derelict house who lived there? and what happened to the house?
During the school holidays all the kids of the village would head to Bazil Point there in the corner by the James's Fishermans hut we would spend the day swimming messing about in the boats as the tide came in, making rope swings from the trees on the banks. I went past 53 herbert road today it is now a house. I stoppped for a while good times remembered I also went to number 26 where my grandparents lived , now an empty house.
I wasn't born there but the years I spent in Rumford were some of my happiest. We moved there in 1960, my parents bought a house in the very centre of the village which also had a grocery shop attached. It turned out that I was the only girl actually living in the village although there were only a couple of other children near my age in the village surrounds. Rumford didn't have its own church

I was born in Muswell Hill in 1960 and lived in Hampden Road. I went to Nursery and Primary School at Hollickwood School in Sydney Road. Spent many happy hours as I grew up sampling all the different ice cream flavours in Maude's Ice Cream parlour nearby! How well I remember the camp fires at Buckmore Park although the pictures shown were taken a liitle more than 10 years after I went there. It was there we sang songs and shanties and the one that stuck in my mind the most was Ging Gang Gooly Gooly Gotcha. My name is Nigel Baugh, I lived in Buildwas until the age of 21 when I got married and moved out. My parents still live in the village at the top of the road. Life was good, play around, up the woods making dens, riding bikes down the road at brake neck speeds and getting a clip round the ear off the folks, which never did us any harm. I was born in 1958 and lived in the flats in Bancroft Road. From around 1963 to 1966 I went to Warrington Road Infants School . I remember it as being a big dark gothic looking place that even then seemed hundreds of years old . Does anyone else have any memories or pictures ? I lived at High Dyke opposite Bewley's farm, I went to St. Pauls school and remember Mr T Moore the head teacher, farther down from our house was Trevaskis's shop which always smelt of firelighters, on the other side of the road was McCurry's shop next to the house where I was born. I was born in South Ockendon Cliff Place (Julie Harding) I had 3 sisters Vera, Brenda & Margaret. We are all still living but old age is creeping up.

Grandma Annie Dann was the telephonist at the beginning of WW2.
She worked from her front room in Halesworth and had a large bell over her bed so that during the night she would run down to the exchange to connect the calls.

I was sent to MBS in 1972 because i refused to go to school. All i did in my early days there was abscond. Hated the place!!! Full of bullies, if you were small or timid in Mobberley you were a target.
The staff were even worse too.
Used to hate the nights coming round, got many a slap with a dap, still don't know why he had it in for me.

There was a lot more green fields in the1940's. White gate farm was where the swimming baths are now.
there was Smith farm opposite the White Hart which had a pond outside and the cows were driven from a field which is now Baptist to farm entrance at the end of the Alders. There was also a field beside the legion and a grass patch in the front the legion until they joined manor park road with ravenswood.

My great-grandmother, Gertrude Bowes (née James) was the Park Attendant in Kilburn Grange Park.
Her granddaughter, my mother, Margaret, spoke a lot about visiting her and the happy times she had in Kilburn.
A few years ago, I visited the park with my mother and she reminisced about the area. A lady saw us walking around and she asked us where we were from; when we mentioned Mrs Bowes, the Park Attendant, she remembered her from all those years before.
We moved to Haydock Ave in early 50's when mother became a receptionist for Dr Foots surgery. He eventually needed the property back for a resident doctor so we moved into a prefab in Rowdell Rd , after a few years these were knocked down and we moved to Islip Manor Road where both mum and dad passed away. Great memories of the place and a great time to grow up . Now down in Wiltshire
I lived in upper belvedere, but worked in the menswear department of welling co-op from 1959-60. Cannot remember any names except a girl called Barbra who was on the counter near the door. I have great memories of my days growing up in northolt. From early 60 s in bengarth rd. Walking to Gifford school through the alley and horse fields. Later taking my brother Neil to the infants there. Rushing back home. First one at the crossing at church rd would be awarded with a sweet from the lolly pop man. ( they get arrested for that now). My grand parents and parents (Parky, Barb, Bill and Erica Smith) owned and farmed Middle Lee in the 1950's and 60's. I have wonderful early childhood memories of hayfields, streams, rides in the wheel barrow, feeding lambs and piglets and the busy summer days with 'visitors' staying in the house. I even recall visiting Granny and Granfer Smith, great grandparents who lived in the village with Uncle Lewis and Aunt Vida, the Fanner family at the village stores and choir practice at the church.
My "sixth" great grandparents James Norfolk and Mary Wilson were married in St Peter's Church at Birstall. This was on 3rd September 1690.
If any other person following up family history at this parish has a connection with either of these two 6 X great grandparents I would be very pleased to hear from you.
I also seek a copy of any painting or print of the church as it may have appeared before modern rebuilding and welcome any suggestions on where to find this please.
There were several modern dance venues which we regularly frequented, including The Ritz Ballroom which once stood at the junction of the Kingsbury Road and the western end of the Old Kenton Lane, and the Churchill Club which stood in Elmwood Avenue at the junction of the Kenton Road. My Dad was born in Gyncorrwg in 1941 and worked in the mines. My memories of Glyncorrwg would be staying with my grampy Tony who lived up the top.I still visit the village as I have cousins there I love the place, so quiet and peaceful
with all the hills around you. I plan to go back in the next few months to surprise my cousins and have a good old catch up.

My Mum & Dad,Nellie & Pat Murphy bought our house at 63 Francklyn Gardens pre war as a brand new house.
My sister Maureen was born during the war and spent a lot of time in an Air raid shelter in our front room !!
My brother Mick and I Barbara were born post war but I can still remember food rationing and Barrage balloons in Edgwareberry Park.

I moved to the village in 1981, I loved it. Especially coming from a city. I lived on sowdley green, I went to St Marys on school rd, the head teacher was Mr Thompson, with teachers Mr Liddell, Mr Simpson . the the middle school opened and I went there in 85, great memories of playing around the village , around fentonhouse lane , and knocking around with Neil whittingham, Scott simpkin. I was born in Gibbeson Terrace off the High street in early 1941. My first memory is hearing air raid sirens going off early in the morning, I think they were just practising. We were a poor family although my dad was doing special war work, so he was not conscripted. I was born in the High Street( not the High Road) in 1950 moving to Rugby Avenue in 1953. I lived opposite Graham Rose.
I recall the Sudbury Motors Garage. They had Morgan 3 wheelers and drove them up and down Rugby Avenue.
Happy memories of Barham Park and Vale Farm swimming pool.
One of the things i remember about the old Cross Street was there was an entrance off it to the back of the Express Dairy. In the days of horse drawn Milk Carts they had their stables here and my Great Uncle Ernie worked there as the groom in charge of the horses. He was a countryman by birth and worked there until he retired.

I was born in West Street in 1953 - my father was the manager at Lovibond's wine merchants. This photo is the closest to it. I remember the Black Horse, which was down the road from where we lived, and The Swan, which was half way up West Street (where Swan Walk is now). I was born in 1954 and I lived in Batley Carr with my mum, Brenda (nee Charlesworth) and my dad, Tommy and younger brother, Kevin.

Frederick Sole was my maternal grandfather - to find a photo of this era online is amazing. When he retired in his 70s the shop was taken over by one of his old 'Saturday boys' and is still in those safe hands now, so it feels as if my grandfather is still alive in spirit in 1 Market St.
My name is Peter.I also lived with my family in Hever Road. In 1949 aged 5. Returning from living with my grandmother to my family at 'Selcroft' Hever Road. It was the white painted wooden bungalow opposite the shop, owned by Mr and Mrs Hart, on the cross roads with Hever Avenue.

I was born in Upney Hospital in 1950, my first home was Blatchford Close, in the Prefabs, Ripple Road opposite the Cemetery, I have been searching for photos or information, but as yet have had no luck, hoping that someone might know of them. I moved to Thames View Estate in 1955, Barking was a great place to grow up in, we didn't have much money, but kids made their own fun for free, remember walking over the marshes thinking we were at the seaside when we got to the river.
My mother's family lived in Sturry all their lives. My Mum and her 3 siblings were born at 4 High Street and lived there for years. She even met my Dad there as he lived a short time at 3 High Street.
My grandfather was head gardener at Milner Court and every summer my parents and I spent the school summer holidays there as he and my grandmother acted as caretakers during the Junior Kings School summer break. ...see more

I have this photo. Some 25 yrs ago I was in an antique shop with my late father when he saw this photo and told me the man was my grandfather, who I never met, and the horses belonged to him. They were used in the families green grocers in north street. The shop was in the family for some time as I would go there as a young boy after school at langtons. During my search of my family history, I have discovered that a brother of my gran (Annie Brown nee Shill) owned a shop on Denmark street, Bristol. He ran a hairdressing business from 1917-1930. It was near to the Hatchet Pub, on a corner of the street.

Ethel was admitted to St Peter's Home, Kilburn in January 1926. Risebourgh Hall was once a magnificent house and home about 3 miles from Thornton Le Dale and four miles from Pickering North Yorkshire. It stands on Risebourgh Hill and commands sweeping views across Ryedale from its imposing position.
The Hall was a beautiful old stone building, part of which dates back to the 16th century.
In its hey day Risebourgh Hall would have been the pinicle of elegance ...see more

I started work on a Saturday while I was still at school in the Co-op next to the Wimpy and I was working there when the football world cup was played.
I used to go to the Methodist church that was on this site before they built this. While our new church was being built up Park Lane opposite the School we had the Sunday school and church services held in Copland school.
I am looking for any images or information about Hemsworth Library between 1955 and 1975. I am doing research on W.A. Ismay who was branch librarian during that time and would really appreciate any help.
