We are looking east along Newgate promenade towards the Highcliffe Hotel (visible on the left), with groups of Victorian holidaymakers strolling in the sun. In the centre is the white façade of the Cliftonville Hotel, where now stand Thorley's public house and a bowling alley. The luxurious Cliftonville was built in 1868; it sported its own tennis courts, croquet lawns and cricket pitch. It was demolished in
