Amongst the facilities provided by the Cliftons was the old lifeboat house, built largely from cobbles and overlooking the promenade wall. Just behind it on the green stands the town's windmill, still a famous landmark. Sited to take full advantage of the winds blowing off the Irish Sea, it was built as a corn mill in about 1805.
