More about this scene
In 1905 The Vauxhall Iron Works moved to Luton from its London base. Thereafter it enjoyed some considerable sporting success and built cars for the wealthy and influential. After World War I, however, the necessity to open its products to a wider clientele imposed financial strains that were only alleviated by the purchase of the company by General Motors in 1925. This impressive building is the company canteen, capable of feeding over half the workforce at any one time. Facilities also included a fully operational theatrical stage and broadcasting equipment that was often used by the BBC for light entertainment productions requiring an appreciative audience. The temporary bollards in the foreground were 'temporary' for five years before being replaced by a more permanent traffic division.
