More about this scene
We are looking up Church Street towards St Mary's Parish Church and the Priory. The printing offices of the Lancaster Guardian was the second building on the right. Church Street was used as an open market on Lancaster Fair days. As the town was important, its Charter allowed four of these Fair Days—3 April, 1 May, 5 July and 10 October, which was also the Winter Fair and Hiring Day. Lancaster's first Charter of 1199 gave Wednesday and Saturday as market days.
