More about this scene
There are plenty of spectators on the pier to watch the arrival at Hull of the Eclipse class cruiser HMS 'Dido'. Built in 1896 by the London & Glasgow Shipbuilding Co, 'Dido' displaced 5600 tons and was armed with 5 x 6-inch and 7 x 4.7-inch guns. The class was re-armed in 1905-06 to mount 11 x 6-inch, 8 x 12-pdr (12 cwt), 1 x 12-pdr (8 cwt), 7 x 3-pdr, 2 Maxims and 3 x 18-inch torpedo tubes (including one stern tube). Powered by two sets of inverted triple expansion engines, fed by eight boilers and 24 furnaces, the Eclipses could exceed 19-20 knots for short periods. Riding at anchor to the right of the funnel of the 'Manchester' is HMS 'Southampton', a boys' training ship at Hull from 1867 to 1912.
