More about this scene
We have two items of interest in this picture: the archway, the Gannock Gate, and the Red Mount Chapel behind the trees on the left. The Gannock Gate is made of stone and brickwork, and the greater part is of modern workmanship. The gatekeeper in ancient times would have been a significant member of the community. He would be armed with a heavy club; part of his duties was to check on vagrants and strangers, who would not be admitted unless they could give a good account of themselves.
