More about this scene
Hidden behind the trees is the parish church of St Michael and All Saints; burial place of Bernard Gilpin (died 1583), cleric, orator, philanthropist, and founder of Houghton Grammar School. Gilpin came to Houghton after being cleared of charges of heresy, but he was indicted a second time and was on his way to answer the charges when he broke his leg. The accident almost certainly saved him from the stake: while he was recuperating Mary Tudor died, and was succeeded by Elizabeth. The charges were then dropped.
