More about this scene
The Churchyard in about 1965. The War Memorial is on the left and left of centre is Halsey's. W Darby & Co, occupying the old St Mary's vicarage, is an electrical retailer. Next door is Woodbridge's, specialising in gentlemen's shoes. C W Morris on the right is a draper and ladies' outfitter. The weighing machine between Woodbridge and Morris's took one old penny, less than 1/2p. Weighing machines like this one were once common, and an example can be seen in Hitchin Museum in Paynes Park.
