Golders Green, The Memorial And Golders Green Road c.1960

I was born in Temple Fortune in 1972 and moved to Golders Green in 1973. I remember shopping in Woolworths which was next door to the library, it was a huge branch and sold plants and seeds at the back. There was a pet shop at the end of the alley way near Woolworths where my sister and I used to buy pet tortoises! Then there was MacFisheries a bit further along. I think that when your photographer set up his camera to take this scene he was not intending to take 'Ye Olde Grove Farme' shop, but the site of the public house 'The White Swan', (behind the tree) which, as far as I know is still there; or was when I was in the area a few years ago. On the far left of the picture you can see the pub sign. .

A really great Golders Green former establishment is (or was) the Prince Albert pub (later a Harvester Restaurant) which was situated at 290 Golders Green Road, London, NW11 9PY. It was a great jazz pub where people would meet and make friends. Now that has long gone, even though very buzzing and thriving in the Harvester guise. I have one of the earliest known photographs of the building that occupied the site in the 1800's. The house was started as a 'Beer House' by a Frederick Smith circa 1851. It underwent a rebuild by Richard King c1898, and included a 'Tea House' along side. The King family were also Timber Merchants in Brent Street, Hendon, and Highfield Road, Golders Green.
