More about this scene
By the 1880s, Eastbourne became 'The Empress of Watering Places', set against the backdrop of Beachy Head. In the distance is the Wish Tower, one of the Martello tower fortlets built during the Napoleonic Wars. Apart from the small villa, the Italianate stucco terrace houses of the 1850s and later mostly remain.
