This red brick building is dated 1868 on the gable end. The 18th-century white plastered house is the former Town Hall, reminding us of the town's former borough status. The next three cottages, including the former post office, are dated 1770, but they may be older. At the end is the Museum in the former Victorian Reading Room.

My parents owned and ran The Ship Inn from 1960 to 1975. My father a retired soldier and wartime paratrooper had taken early retirement to buy the business, then called The Barne Arms Hotel after the estate. The new Inn sign was based on the Blue Peter logo from the BBC Children's programme (from whom he'd got permission to use a similar but not identical design).
