Nostalgic memories of Dagenham's local history

Share your own memories of Dagenham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Sandwiched between the District line and Ivyhouse road was where i lived in a small 2 bedroom council house built for £ 200 quid with a shared porch and a tiny front garden and a long and narrow back garden ending at the district line it had wooden spikes held together with wire as a garden fence and a pear tree, sharing our porch was an elderly lady called Maude she lived alone and could not speak as ...see more
I went to Monteagle elementary school in 1953, and my brother was a Park Modern Secondary. We lived on Ripple Road, and my mother and father had the Cosy Cafe. Dad also worked at Silcock and Colling. I remember the pub up the road, which was the Ship and Shovel. We emigrated to America in 1954, but returned for a visit in 1992....and were happy to see the pub still there. Cosy Cafe was there too, but not the same. Our family name was Marr, and I was Christine, my brother was Barry.

i remember dancing over Burtons at Heathway Dagenham with Harry and Phil Doughty, 1958 onwards.I would like to hear from anyone who can relate to this time and place, I had a group of friends who some I can't remember their names but Ken Davis, Helen, Valerie, Josie and Mac, were a few, we had many outings with the dancing school and lots of lovely memories. Get in touch if you were part of that era. Pauline.
My name was Annie Sorrell. Moved to Margery Rd in the early sixties and the gates to the park, where the swimming pool was situated, were at the bottom of our short street. Spent all day, everyday in the swimming pool during the summer school holidays with my friend Carol Holt. It had three diving boards and a spring board. Loved the spring board. Also had a buffet area where you could buy a hot oxo drink and sunbathe till you was ready to go back into the water. Happy, happy days
How many people on here worked at the every ready and precision tapes?
I remember that I used to accompany my mother to pay our rent at the Civic Centre. There were revolving doors at the entrance and these used to fascinate me. I always looked forward to going there because of the doors.
1966 onwards are my memories of this swimming pool, we had so much fun during our 6 week break from Triptons School my three brothers and I. In fact my brother Danny was a lifeguard or at least he thought he was. It would be fantastic to hear from anyone who remembers us. Maureen Hewitt

They met on Heathway Station and married at Old Dagenham Church in 1943. I moved away from Marston Avenue where mum still lives in 1969 and live near King's Lynn. I went to Alibon Road School for a short while before being moved to Five ...see more
