Heathway

A Memory of Dagenham.

I worked after school and Saturdays at Gillings Fishmongers (7 Station Parade) in late 70’s / early 80’s. Either side we had the Gas Shop and Jaspa (Clothing). Most of the traders on the Heathway came in for their fish and chips on Friday so you got to know them well. A very friendly community. I recall most shops closing half day on Thursday afternoons. Arthur Day ran the sweet shop between John Collier and Tesco. Woolworth (refurbished after the fire) and Boots were also along the parade was the Doctors Surgery, Solicitors and a Travel Agents. Near the Station was Mecca Bookmakers and I remember when Wallis put a store in over the railway line adjacent to Heathway Station. If I recall correctly George ? and Mrs. Allen sold newspapers on the station forecourt. Marino’s was the first shop past the Station where we used to pop in and buy sweets before crossing the roads when taken to Saturday morning pictures before it closed down. Happy days indeed.

Comments & Feedback

I can see your comments are from 2017 so we are 7 years on now! I remember much of what you described. I am 58 now and my memories are mostly from the 70s and early 80s. My mum used to buy a piece of smoked haddock most weeks from the fishmonger which I think was also a chip shop? She used to take me to Jaspa clothing and she would sometimes buy clothes there. I also remember the gas shop, John Collier which later became Barclays Bank. We also used the Travel agents on the John Collier side of the hill. I also remember a shop we went to called Bywise. A shop selling odd bits and pieces. I remember Wallis too which had a toy department upstairs also selling records (K-Tel, etc). I remember being bought a game from there called 'Over the Brink'. I have some poor quality photos I sourced from somewhere where you can see the Tesco's, Mathews butchers next door and a greengrocer in the 70s when the carnival was on. Also can see Mister Byrite. I also remember an Our Price record shop I think it was. Great memories.
