The Temperance Hotel had given way to Boot's. Also gone was the old Conduit: it was moved in 1939 to Tower Gardens. A more functional traffic island had replaced it and the age of the zebra crossing was under way. So, too, was another age: see the Curry's Television van parked in front of the Queen's Head.

This shows the view looking up Tindal Street from the London Road end. In the centre of the photo you can see a sign sticking out. This you can just make out is the Spotted Dog public house which was there until that side of the road was developed.
