The House Beautiful

A Memory of Bournemouth.

I remember staying at The House Beautiful in the 1950’s and to me it was not a good experience and has
left its mark on me all my life.

I was sent there on two occasions by Social Services as my mother was recovering from an operation and no one in the family would look after
me. One occasion was over Christmas when I was joined by my brother. we were given lots of presents even taken to a local family house for
a party, I tried to write a letter home which was confiscated.

The only enjoyment was walking through the Chimes. I remember
porridge for breakfast and cocoa in the evening.

We sang a lot of choruses and there was strict discipline. I remember good night to a church nearby which had a beautiful blue domed ceiling. Does anyone else remember this?

Comments & Feedback

I've been searching for ages for any information regarding the House Beautiful.
I spent two 6 weeks stays there in the mid 50s. I had been sent by West Ham welfare office due to recovering from a medical condition
which I have completely forgotten.
They were the happiest times for me because I had never seen the sea. Walking down the winding path and, the beautiful beach has always been in my memory. I remember picking up fir cones and, being told that they old tell you the weather ha,ha.
