Those Were The Days

A Memory of Pickering.

I was born at 53 Potter Hill, it was great in those day's. Mrs Jones had the shop at the top of Potter Hill, same row as the Church was on. We were 4 doors away from Codge Frank, the chicken and egg man. Nita was at the fish and chip shop, think her name was Aires, but don't know if that is spelt correctly. We played lot's of games in the street's in those days, as not many cars about. We played kick the can, and marbles to name but a few. I was in a gang where Peter Watson was the leader, Tommy Jones, and a Lewis lad was also in this gang. We got up to some great pranks, but nothing nasty like you see today. Alan Taylor had a joiner's shop next to the fish shop. And Peter Morse had a small paint and papering shop, just 3 door's from us. We used to meet on the island, that was grassed in those day's just over from our house. Kinghorn's had a milk yard down near the school, which is the W M Club now. The rag and bone man used to visit the street often as did the man on a bike that sharpened the knives. I can remember Cooks having the riding school near Wells Walk, but don't know what happened to them, as my Dad built his own bungalow and we moved down Malton Road to live. I say bring back the good old days. Best wishes to any one who can recall me, I am Neil Chamberlain but was alway's called Chibby Chamberlain.
