Cound Hall

A Memory of Cound.

After my grandfather's death the family home at Bishop's Castle was sold and his daughter, my aunt Daisy Probert moved to a rented top floor flat in Cound Hall. At that time the Hall was home to a rich selection of characters living in what my late father called 'genteel poverty' (!). My older brother and I spent several happy school holidays staying there: at that time the lake still had water, and was a beautiful feature of the gardens.

I stopped there last on my way home from a University interview. It was winter, and the house looked magnificent as my taxi from Shrewsbury swept up the drive. The driver, who had never been there before, was awestruck at the sight of the Hall ablaze with lights. I didn't have the heart to tell him it was all split up into rented flats!
