Whitby, Abbey Arches 1913

More about this scene
This photograph shows a very different picture from today's carefully mown and tended lawns. Once the lead had been removed from the roof it was not long before the structure began to crumble, and many of the stones were taken. Here and there a few monastic stones can be found in some Whitby walls and buildings. The west front largely collapsed in 1914 after a raid by German battle cruisers, which shelled Whitby and scored a hit on the abbey. The façade has since been partially rebuilt.
