More about this scene
Whickham was once an important economic asset to the prince bishops of Durham. In 1183 the Boldon Book refers to 'coalsmiths' at Sedgefield and Bishopwearmouth and to colliers at Escomb. Coal was being extracted at a profit from the Whickham and Gateshead area well before the end of the 13th century.
