Retlaws Toy Shop

A Memory of West Ealing.

Where Leeland Terrace comes out by Deans Gardens there used to be a public toilets before Leeland Terrace was extended. Next to this was a shop called Retlaws. It is now a Pizza shop. However in those far off days Retlaws reigned supreme as a toy shop. Down the side was a little path in front of a long window. In this window were Dinky Toys, Hornby Dublo electric trains, Hornby Clockwork trains in O gauge, and of course Mecano. All products of Binns Road, Liverpool. The price of each item was carefully written on a little card. Around the front of the shop the window was again packed full, not of toys but bicycle and motor bike accessories. I remember buying Mecano girders and wheels. All displayed in a huge glass fronted box. When I was older and got my first motor bike where did I go for a crash helmet? Yes Retlaws.

My grandfather, William Mason, ran and managed Retlaws from before WWII until his death in 1960. I can just remember visiting the shop with my mother when I was five. We used to live in Northfield road round the corner. He used to give me a dinky toy when we visited, several I still have. Before the war my Grand parents, mother and uncle lived over the shop in the flat above, moving to a house in Cuckoo Dean.
The shop was owned my a Mr Downy.
